What ASO is, and what it is not

App Store Optimization from zero. What it is, which fields count, what can be measured, and what an app should do in order over its first three months.

App Store Optimization is the work of improving how an app is found in App Store search. The definition is that narrow, and the narrowness matters - most of what is sold under the name falls outside it.

It is not making screenshots prettier. That is conversion work and it is important, but it does not affect being found; text in screenshots is not indexed.

It is not collecting ratings. Ratings do affect rank, but collecting them is solved inside the product, not in metadata.

It is not buying ads. Ad placements in search results work separately from organic rank and do not improve it.

It is: measuring which phrases you appear for, deciding which ones you should appear for, and writing the three indexed fields accordingly. The job is those three things and all three are dully mechanical.

Being mechanical is good news. Work that needs creativity has unpredictable outcomes; mechanical work has measurable, repeatable ones.

The fields Apple indexes

The fields that make you findable are limited and they do not carry equal weight. Any edit made without knowing what counts where is a shot in the dark.

App name: visible to the user, indexed, the strongest field. It is also the most expensive - the character limit is tight and the name carries brand value.

Subtitle: visible, indexed, the second strongest. Easier to change than the name; the field most often used to carry a cusp-band phrase to the first page.

Keyword field: invisible to the user, 100 characters, open only to the developer. The words in it combine freely with one another to form phrases - the field's most important and least known property.

Fields that are not indexed: the long description, the screenshots, the release notes. Those matter for conversion, not for being found. Stuffing keywords into the description tires the reader and gains nothing in search.

And there is the country dimension: each of the 175 countries and regions Apple is open in has its own keyword field, and most of them are indexed independently.

The five things that can be measured

All of ASO rests on five measurements. Whichever guide you read, you will come back to these.

  1. RankWhere your app appears when a phrase is searched in a country. If it is not in the first 200 we write "outside 200" rather than inventing a large number. Measured once a day and the history is kept.
  2. PopularityA relative value for how much a phrase is searched, derived from Apple's own signals. Not absolute search volume - Apple gives that to nobody. Where it cannot be measured the field stays blank, never zero.
  3. DifficultyThe strength of the apps competing for the phrase: how many carry it in their title, what the rating counts at the top are, how many words the phrase has. Not a prophecy - a cost estimate.
  4. RelevanceWhether Apple has associated your app with the phrase. If you appear in the first 200 it has; if not, you have to make it. That distinction is what makes one keyword cheap and another expensive.
  5. The rating curveHow the score and count move over time. It does not carry rank directly, but a drop after a release is the fastest signal that something broke in it.

The four things that cannot

A guide's credibility is measured by what it declines to say. Four things cannot be measured, and tools claiming otherwise are estimating.

Absolute search volume. Apple does not publish how many times a phrase is searched in a month. Popularity is relative and is written as relative everywhere.

Download count. Apple does not give it to third parties; the figures in circulation are computed backwards from rank and rating count, and their error bars vary widely by category.

Revenue. In-app purchase and subscription revenue is entirely closed. We can see the price, not how many paid it.

Conversion rate. How many of the people who saw the page installed is visible only in your own developer account.

All four look fillable with an estimate. We do not fill them, because the moment an estimate goes on a screen the reader takes it for a measurement and decides on it.

Month one: set up the measurement

Starting ASO from zero, the only job of the first month is setting up measurement. No moves are made this month, and none should be.

Week one: widen the pool. Pull phrases from your own metadata, rival metadata, search suggestions, category charts and rival reviews. All five channels are needed; most teams settle for the first two and end up with a narrow pool.

Week two: measure the pool. Popularity, current rank and difficulty for each phrase. After that the pool has become a table and a table can be decided on.

Week three: build the list. Set aside the phrases whose popularity could not be measured, eliminate the ones describing work your app does not do, split the rest into bands. Aim for six rows.

Week four: add rivals. Five to eight apps that recur across the phrases you track. They will be your control group.

At the end of the month you have a pool, a six-row list, a rival list and four weeks of rank history. Everything needed to make a move is in place.

Month two: the first moves

In the second month one move is made per week and every move is measured.

Choosing the move: from the 11-30 band on your list, the phrase with the highest popularity. The ones lower in the band are cheaper - winning a few places is easier than winning fifteen.

Choosing the field: subtitle for phrases at 11-15, keyword field for those at the bottom of the band. Touching the app name is right only when the phrase genuinely describes what the product does.

Then waiting. Apple's index does not update immediately; arrival usually takes a few days. A second change in that window mixes the effects of two moves together.

Then comparing. Subtract the control group's average movement and write what is left down to the move. If you won, apply the same kind of move to the next phrase; if you lost, undo it.

And record every move: date, country, which field, its old form, its new form. That record is the third month's raw material.

  • One move a week, one field per release.
  • Start from the 11-30 band, highest popularity first.
  • Subtitle at the top of the band, keyword field at the bottom.
  • Subtract the control group's movement every time.
  • Record every move with five fields; it is the only reliable way to undo one.

Month three: accumulate the learning

By the third month a record of eight to ten moves exists and the first real inferences can be drawn.

First: which field works for your app? Split the moves by type and count how many times each was tried and how many times it won. A type tried fewer than three times tells you nothing.

Second: what is the market's tempo? The control group's average weekly movement tells you how large your moves need to be. If the market moves three places a week, a two-place gain cannot be measured.

Third: where are the walls? Phrases no move has shifted are where the strength threshold is in play. Move them to a separate list and return as the product grows.

Fourth: is the pool still producing candidates? If the band is emptying you need to widen it; the most productive sources are rival reviews and new countries.

At the end of three months ASO is no longer a project, it is maintenance: two and a half hours a week plus another two and a half a month.

Countries: the most neglected part of the job

Most teams do ASO for one country and leave the rest empty. That is the largest and most invisible loss there is.

Every country Apple is open in has its own keyword field. Leaving one empty spends all 100 characters there, and there is no warning of any kind: your app is live, its page renders, it simply does not appear in search.

Second: the same language is searched differently in different countries. Local equivalents, everyday usage and brand names diverge. Copying one country's metadata into another spends one of the two.

Third: letter folding depends on the country. In Turkish and Azerbaijani a capital I becomes a dotless ı, everywhere else a dotted i. Applied wrongly, a phrase like "AI" becomes "aı" in the Turkish pool and matches nobody searching for it.

Fourth: cost. Each country means searching all of your phrases again. Adding a country costs more than adding a phrase, which is why countries go in one at a time.

The practical route: run the loop for a month in the storefront with the most downloads, then add the second. Starting in ten at once ends with measurement in none.

Where ASO ends

The most necessary section of a guide is the one that says where the work stops.

ASO makes the app findable. What makes it installed after that is the page itself: the icon, the screenshots, the first two lines, the price and the score. That ground cannot be measured from outside, so this guide does not enter it.

The practical test: if your rank rises and your downloads do not, the problem is not ASO. Visibility went up and the arriving user was not convinced; at that point the move is not one more keyword, it is the screenshots and the first two lines.

The second stopping point is the strength threshold. If the median rating count of the top 10 is far above yours across every phrase you target, there is no distance left to take with metadata. The work has moved to the product and ASO should say so.

The third is the band running dry. If nothing is left waiting to be spent and the pool produces no new candidates, the loop is turning over nothing. A new country or a new source is needed.

Stopping is not failure. ASO is maintenance work; when there is nothing to maintain, what is being done is busywork.

Frequently asked

How long does ASO take to show a result?
The first measurable one usually lands in the second month: one move, the index settling, and a week's comparison. Meaningful learning takes three months.
My app is not live yet - is there anything I can do now?
You can run the pool-widening part: rival metadata, search suggestions, category charts and rival reviews. Writing the first metadata against that pool is far easier than correcting it later.
How many countries should I start in?
One. Run the loop for a month where you get the most downloads, then add the second. Starting in ten at once ends with measurement in none of them.
Should I optimise my screenshots too?
Yes, but that is conversion work, not ASO. The two run on different measurements: ASO moves visibility, screenshots move conversion. If your rank rose and downloads did not, it is the screenshots' turn.
Why no percentages or average effects?
Writing an average effect down requires long measurement across many apps, and that data has not accumulated. When it does it will be published; until then a percentage would be invention.
