Category ranking

The second discovery channel, independent of search: your place in the charts.

Category charts work separately from search results and largely watch install velocity. A metadata edit does not move them directly - but installs arriving from search push them up too.

They are worth tracking because they are diagnostic.

  • Daily position

Where you stand in your own category, separately in the free and paid charts.

  • Rivals alongside

The apps you track appear in the same list, so a jump by one of them is immediately visible.

  • A diagnostic

If your search ranks hold steady while your category rank falls, the problem may be demand rather than visibility.

  • Install band

The estimate derived from rating growth is shown as a range, never as a single number.

Category rank and search rank are not the same thing

Climbing in search is a matter of metadata and relevance; climbing the charts is a matter of velocity. The two curves diverging is the signature of a campaign or of seasonality.

Read together, they usually answer “what happened this month?” at a glance.

What it does not do

We do not claim to measure what we cannot. This screen's limits:

  • Category charts cannot be read at the same depth in every country and every category.
  • The install estimate is a band, not a measurement; where the measurement is insufficient the band is not shown either.

Frequently asked

How do I raise my category rank?
There is no direct lever. Increasing installs from search, raising conversion and improving retention are all indirect but real routes.

No setup, no credit card, not even an Apple account: rank, popularity and difficulty are read from the store's public data.
